Up to the present, in fact, there is no Professional Register of Translators and Interpreters in Italy, which would be capable of guaranteeing qualitative parameters and levels of professionalism adequate to the delicacy of the role.
With this aim in mind, ALTRINIT (Italian Register of Translators and Interpreters) was founded, www.altrinit.it, an association which proposes to sensibilise the competent legislative bodies, with a view to completing the parliamentary procedure of the bill C. 766 for the institution ofa Professional Roll of Translators and Interpreters, proposed on July 31 2006 by the Right Honourable Angela Napoli.
Ensuring that there be adequate educational qualifications and professional experience will constitute the best guarantee against the many, the too many, self-styled translators and/or interpreters who, even today, operate undisturbed in Italy, producing results which would be only laughable and ridiculous were it not for the fact that often they weigh heavily on the future of the client, as much in personal terms (legal, penal, health, social consequences) as in professional (in the best of hypotheses loss of image, and therefore of clients, and therefore of income).
