Translation, the language service par excellence
Too often considered a purely technical activity, translation, on the contrary, requires a series of competencies, knowledge and ability, as well as a substantial dose of intuition and creativity, without which it is not possible to obtain either stylistically valid results or texts which are reliable from the point of view of content.
Through the translator, not only are literary works known of and understood by cultures with which they could never have contact otherwise, but also political, legal, scientific and commercial forms of communication find their just channels of circulation and comprehension.
An important responsibility, therefore, that demands extremely high levels of competence, since it has to do with fundamental spheres of human life. Consider a law trial, a report from one embassy to another, scientific research results, a medical case history, or user instructions for material which is potentially dangerous…
These are just some examples of how decisive a translator’s contribution can be – it being understood that here we are referring exclusively to the human translator, since so called “machine translation”, the automatic translator, cannot do other than produce results which are lacking in sense. A contribution which even today goes unrecognised.
Who does what?
From the perspective of an extreme respect for the code of ethics of the profession of translator, Wordfly Language Services has developed an operational structure which today is well consolidated and functional, and which includes a series of services specific to global communication. Basing its activity on the competencies and experience of its own team of highly qualified translators, which is enriched constantly by new collaborators, all selected on the basis of our Wordfly Evaluation Procedure, it has developed a professional segmentation, thanks to which it can today offer high efficiency, total awareness of its role and remarkable reliability.
Yet what is intended by professional segmentation? The essential concept is simple, but not simplistic: no one is capable of doing everything. It begins with the Wordfly Evaluation Procedure: a merit system procedure, which candidates follow from the moment in which they make application to Wordfly Language Services. This procedure allows not just for the exclusive selection of the most qualified candidates, but also for the highly precise verification of the specialist areas in which each of them is capable of operating with assurance and authority.
Directory Trees
Our data bank develops, in effect, into an infinite number of directory trees which permits us to entrust each job only to the professional who is in possession of competencies and experience, not just in the language combination required, as obviously should be the case, but also in the specific sector to which the relevant text belongs. Because it is fitting (as well as just) that each translator attend exclusively to that which he/she knows well, not yielding to the temptation of handling specialist spheres which are not well known, which would quickly become minefields.
The destination of a translation
When estimates are being drawn up, it is undoubtedly important to specify the destination and the type of use of the text to be translated. For example, a translation into English requires a type of localization which is decidedly different, according to whether the text is circulated in Liverpool as opposed to Sydney or Dubai, just as a text translated into Spanish will be localized opportunely for Barcelona, for Lima or for Cuba, or yet again, a text translated into Arabic will take on a look appropriate according to the occasion for Kabul, Abu Dhabi or Algiers.
Examples, these, which could be extended at length, since the languages existing are in their hundreds and there are very many combinations and applications created by history and the cultural evolution of man all over the world.
