It often happens that one receives jobs for language combinations which are “new” or rare. Even more frequently, it can occur that the combination requested by the client is the same as that on which all one’s collaborators are currently working. Others are away, and still others on holiday: what can be done?

Today, there is an extraordinary resource on the Web: the translator portals, both for individual translators and for agencies offering language services. These are a precious source to draw upon, in which, usually, the range of professionals available is decidedly ample and sometimes you can even be spoilt for choice. For those who, like us, were active in the profession long before internet positively revolutionized our life, and with its exponential development substantially changed its direction, searching for a colleague BEFORE the arrival of the Internet was a more than arduous task, the results of which could be highly uncertain.

Nevertheless, apart from the amazing opportunities offered by the Internet, it is also true that once one has got to know a collaborator or an agency, the relationship that then develops is, in any event, an unknown element, in the sense that which on paper may have seemed your perfect professional other half emerges at times as less reliable in the long term. And vice versa, thankfully.

For this reason we feel that, today more than ever, professional competence and reliability are fundamental and with regard to these qualities the Internet has an active part to play, since any action, be it successful or not, always finds space sooner or later on the Web. Yet it is also true that at the same time, Internet lends itself to sudden changes of “personality”, professional also, making certain identification difficult if not impossible.
